DID YOU KNOW?

In the mid-200s AD a bishop of Alexandria compared the Greek of Revelation with the Greek of John's Gospel. What did he conclude about their writers?

The answer

Two different Johns. Dionysius noticed that Revelation's writer calls himself John but never the disciple Jesus loved, and that its Greek has errors and rough expressions the Gospel's polished Greek never has. He concluded there must have been another John among the Christians of Asia Minor. He also pointed out that Ephesus had two tombs said to be John's.

Why it’s interesting

Dionysius was not out to reject the book. He wrote that he said it "simply to demonstrate that the two books are not at all similar." Modern scholars agree with him about the writers.
