Outside the Gospels, the New Testament knows a "John Mark" — the traditional author of Mark's Gospel. Who was he?

The answer

A Jerusalem believer. Acts introduces John Mark through his mother's house, where the church met, and he traveled with Paul and Barnabas. No list of the twelve apostles includes a Mark.

Why it’s interesting

Letters later place him at both Paul's and Peter's side — 1 Peter calls him "my son." The earliest tradition says his Gospel preserves Peter's preaching, one step removed from an eyewitness.
