Agree. The writer calls himself John and says he was on Patmos "because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus" (Revelation 1:9). The familiar detail that he was exiled there comes from early tradition, not from the text — Revelation says why he was there, not that he was sent. Whether he's the apostle John, the Gospel writer, or a different John is what scholars debate.
Why it’s interesting
Unlike the Gospels, Revelation does name its author — just not enough to settle which John it is. Its Greek is strikingly different from the Gospel of John, which fuels the question.
