DID YOU KNOW?
The answer
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God tells the man, "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat" (Genesis 2:16-17). The tree of life stands in the same garden (Genesis 2:9), and no rule in the chapter mentions it.
Why it’s interesting
The tree of life comes back at the end of Genesis 3. The humans are sent out of the garden so they cannot eat from it and live forever (Genesis 3:22-24). A study Bible, the New Oxford Annotated Bible, notes that the story spends more of its attention on the other tree, the one about knowing good and evil.
