THIS MIGHT SURPRISE YOU

In Genesis 1, God tells the first people and every animal what they may eat. What is on the menu?

The answer

Plants only. God gives the people "every plant yielding seed" and "every tree with seed in its fruit" (Genesis 1:29). Then he gives "every green plant" to every beast, bird and creeping thing (Genesis 1:30). No one in the chapter is given meat. A note in a study Bible, the New Oxford Annotated Bible, sees this as a picture of a time before any violence.

Why it’s interesting

The menu changes after the flood. God tells Noah and his sons, "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you" (Genesis 9:3). The same study Bible calls Genesis 1's rule a command of vegetarianism, and says Genesis 9 changes the rule.
