DID YOU KNOW?

A reader says: "The later books of the Hebrew Bible, the Jewish scriptures, look back on the garden story as the moment sin entered the world." Agree or disagree?

The answer

Disagree. John Barton, a historian of the Bible, writes that no book of the Hebrew Bible (what Christians call the Old Testament) reads Genesis 3 as the story of how sin came into the world. The Old Testament scholars Michael Coogan and Cynthia Chapman say the Hebrew Bible rarely refers to the garden story at all. The one example they give is Ezekiel 28, a speech against a king who once lived in Eden.

Why it’s interesting

This way of reading the story came later, through a book outside the Hebrew Bible. The Wisdom of Solomon, a Jewish book written in Greek, says "death entered the world" through an adversary's envy (Wisdom of Solomon 2:24). Barton says Paul's argument in Romans 5, that sin came into the world through one man, seems to rest on it.
