THIS MIGHT SURPRISE YOU
The answer
The serpent. In Genesis 3:5 it tells the woman, "you will be like God, knowing good and evil." After they eat, God says it too: "See, the humans have become like one of us, knowing good and evil" (Genesis 3:22). God's rule in Genesis 2:17 had said nothing about becoming like God, only that they would die.
Why it’s interesting
The New Oxford Annotated Bible, a study Bible, says God's worry here about humans becoming godlike recalls the snake's words in Genesis 3:4-5. Michael Coogan and Cynthia Chapman, two Bible scholars, go further and write that on this point the snake was truthful, since what it said is what happens. Genesis records both speeches and weighs neither.
