DID YOU KNOW?
The answer
Genesis 2. In Genesis 2:7 "the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life". Genesis 1 makes people another way: God speaks, and "male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27). The order differs, and so does the method.
Why it’s interesting
Coogan and Chapman's Old Testament textbook calls the Lord God of this scene a potter. A study Bible, the New Oxford Annotated Bible, points to a pun the English hides. The Hebrew for man, adam, sounds like the word for ground, adamah, and the story ties the man to the soil he came from.
