THIS MIGHT SURPRISE YOU

Genesis 1:1 opens on "the heavens and the earth". Genesis 2:4 names the same pair twice, and the second time something changes. What is it?

The answer

The order flips. Genesis 1:1 has "the heavens and the earth". Genesis 2:4 opens with the same words, then turns them round: "the earth and the heavens". Coogan and Chapman's Old Testament textbook lists the flip among the word changes between the two accounts. In the second account, "create" gives way to "make" and "form", and "God" becomes "the Lord God".

Why it’s interesting

Both orders sit inside a single verse, Genesis 2:4. Many scholars read the first half of the verse as the end of the first account. A study Bible, the New Oxford Annotated Bible, notes this, but says the line is probably a heading for the story that follows.
