THIS MIGHT SURPRISE YOU

Genesis 5 totals up each man's life from Adam to Lamech and ends each entry with "and he died." One man's entry ends differently. Who?

The answer

Enoch. Genesis 5:24 says, "Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him." His total is 365 years, while the others in the list live 777 to 969. Michael Coogan and Cynthia Chapman, two Bible scholars, read the number as symbolic: a full circuit, like the days in a year. Enoch, they say, was apparently spared death and taken up to heaven.

Why it’s interesting

The New Oxford Annotated Bible, a study Bible, points to Babylonian traditions in which some figures, Adapa among them, were taken up into heaven. Early Jewish writers, its note adds, had much to say about Enoch's travels and the heavenly wisdom he received. Some of those stories survive in the books of Enoch, which are not in the Bible.
