The answer
Stephen Langton, lecturing in Paris around 1205 before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury, is credited with the chapter system that spread through the medieval Paris Bibles — and into nearly every Bible since. The biblical authors wrote continuous text; the chapters are a study aid laid on top.
Why it’s interesting
Langton is the same archbishop at the center of the Magna Carta crisis of 1215 — the man behind your chapter numbers had a very full decade. Earlier division schemes existed; his is the one that stuck.
