In the NRSVue, Deuteronomy 32:8 says the Most High fixed the boundaries of the peoples "according to the number of" what?

The answer

The gods. The NRSVue reads, "he fixed the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the gods" (Deuteronomy 32:8). Its footnote says the traditional Hebrew text reads "the Israelites" there, while a copy among the Dead Sea Scrolls and the ancient Greek translation support "gods."

Why it’s interesting

With "gods," the Most High gives each nation to one of the lesser gods of his heavenly council, and the Lord keeps Israel as his own (Deuteronomy 32:9). Scholars debate whether the Most High here is another name for the Lord or a separate figure.
