TRADITION VS SCHOLARSHIP
The answer
Disagree. Some scholars use the same methods and reach very conservative conclusions: that the first five books of the Bible are old enough to be by Moses, or that the Gospels give a substantially accurate picture of Jesus.
Why it’s interesting
What makes scholarship critical, on this account, is openness to the evidence, not its conclusions. The old worry it answers: to many, denying that Moses wrote those books seemed blasphemous, since Jesus speaks of what Moses allowed in the law (Matthew 19:8).
