The Septuagint, the old Greek translation, has a shorter David and Goliath chapter. Which of these does it leave out?

The answer

Jesse's errand, the sling verse and Saul's question. The Greek has no 1 Samuel 17:12-31 (Jesse sending David to the camp, Eliab's anger), no 17:50 (the verse that says "there was no sword in David's hand"), no 17:55-58 ("whose son is this young man?"), and no 18:1-5.

Why it’s interesting

The Septuagint was made starting in the third century BC. Where it differs from the Hebrew text we have, most textual critics treat it as a possible witness to an older Hebrew text, and in Samuel some Dead Sea Scroll fragments side with the Greek. The verses it lacks here are the ones where the Hebrew chapter's two tellings were joined.
