DID YOU KNOW?
The answer
Once. At three in the afternoon Jesus cries out, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" and Mark translates it: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Mark 15:34). Three verses later he gives a loud cry with no words and dies. Mark records no other words from the cross, and Matthew has the same single line (Matthew 27:46).
Why it’s interesting
The cry is the first line of Psalm 22. The bystanders in Mark hear it as a call for the prophet Elijah (Mark 15:35). Tradition groups words from all four Gospels into the seven sayings people call Jesus's last words from the cross.
