DID YOU KNOW?

"What I have written I have written." Who says it in John's Gospel?

The answer

Pilate, the Roman governor. In John 19:21-22 the chief priests ask him to change the sign over the cross from "The King of the Jews" to "This man said, I am King of the Jews." He answers, "What I have written I have written." Only John has this conversation. Matthew, Mark and Luke give the sign's wording and say nothing about who wrote it or who objected.

Why it’s interesting

The chief priests' request is small, and Pilate still turns it down. The scholar Raymond Brown sees the scene in John as Pilate announcing the truth about Jesus. He compares it to an official Roman notice, posted in three languages.
