In the list Paul hands on in 1 Corinthians 15, who is the first person the risen Christ appears to?

The answer

Cephas, Paul's name for Peter. The list runs: Cephas, then the twelve, then more than five hundred at once, then James, then all the apostles, and last of all Paul himself. No woman is named on it. A study Bible, the New Oxford Annotated Bible, says the list already belonged to the tradition Paul had received.

Why it’s interesting

In Luke, two people back from Emmaus are met with "The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!" The New Oxford Annotated Bible notes that Luke never shows that scene. In John, the first to see the risen Jesus is Mary Magdalene, outside the tomb.
