DID YOU KNOW?

"Paul's account of the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15 never mentions the empty tomb, or the women who find it in the Gospels." Agree or disagree?

The answer

Agree. Paul says Christ died, was buried and was raised, then lists who he appeared to: Cephas, the twelve, more than five hundred, James, all the apostles, and Paul. The scholar John Barton points out that Paul never mentions the empty tomb. He adds that the women the Gospels put first at the tomb are not on Paul's list.

Why it’s interesting

"He was buried" is the only trace of a grave. The New Oxford Annotated Bible, a study Bible, says this passage is an early statement of faith that had more than one wording. It says the phrase appears only in Paul's version, and that he may have added it himself.
