The answer

The promise of the Father. In Acts 1:4-5 Jesus orders the apostles not to leave Jerusalem but to wait there for what the Father promised. Then he spells it out: John the Baptist baptized with water, but they will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. Luke's Gospel ends on the same order, "stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high" (Luke 24:49).

Why it’s interesting

The New Oxford Annotated Bible's note on Acts 1:4 says Luke only shows the risen Jesus appearing in Jerusalem, not in Galilee. The same note adds that the Greek word behind "staying" in Acts 1:4 usually means eating. So the order may be given at a meal.
