DID YOU KNOW?

People call them the ten plagues of Egypt. Does the phrase "ten plagues" appear anywhere in the Bible?

The answer

Not in the Bible. Exodus never calls the disasters "the ten plagues" and never adds them up. It calls them "signs and wonders" (Exodus 7:3). The book saves its own word for plague almost entirely for the last event, the death of the firstborn (Exodus 11:1).

Why it’s interesting

A study Bible, the New Oxford Annotated Bible, counts nine signs in three sets of three. The death of the firstborn stands apart as the climax. In Old Testament Hebrew, the word for plague usually means a deadly epidemic sent as punishment.
