Deuteronomy 10:4 says the Lord "wrote on the tablets the same words as before." Which verse in Exodus has Moses write the second tablets?

The answer

Exodus 34:28. The Lord tells Moses, "Write these words" (Exodus 34:27), and the next verse says "he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments." Earlier in the same chapter the Lord had said, "I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets" (Exodus 34:1). Exodus 31:18 and Exodus 32:16 both have God write the first set.

Why it’s interesting

The New Oxford Annotated Bible, a study Bible, points out that Moses writes in Exodus 24:4 and God says he has written in Exodus 24:12. Both verses come before the rest of the tablet-writing, in Exodus 31-34. Neither the note nor Exodus says why the writer changes.
