Canaan — Ham's son, who appears nowhere in the tent scene: "Cursed be Canaan; lowest of slaves shall he be to his brothers" (Genesis 9:25). The text never explains why the curse skips a generation.
Why it’s interesting
Canaan is also the name of the land Israel later enters, and many scholars hear national history told as family story. Centuries later the "curse of Ham" was pressed into defending slavery — centuries of use resting on a verse that names Canaan and gives no reason.
