A kingdom. Sennacherib's assassins escape "to the land of Ararat" (2 Kings 19:37), and Jeremiah summons "the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz" (Jeremiah 51:27). Assyrian records call it Urartu — a mountainous kingdom centered near Lake Van.
Why it’s interesting
So Genesis 8:4's "mountains of Ararat" reads naturally as "the highlands of Urartu" — a region roughly where Turkey, Armenia, and Iran now meet. The Bible itself never names a summit.
