The answer

About ten feet of clean, water-laid silt beneath Ur's ruins, with occupation layers above and below. Woolley announced it as evidence of the Flood, and the newspapers agreed. Later digs found flood layers at Kish, Shuruppak, and Nineveh too — dating to different centuries, city by city.

Why it’s interesting

The layers are real: the Tigris and Euphrates drowned cities often, in the very region where flood stories were first written down. What the digs did not produce is a single layer at a single time — each city's flood is its own.
