The Septuagint is the ancient Greek translation of the Jewish scriptures. Which word does it use for the Hebrew Sheol?

The answer

Hades. The Septuagint translates Sheol with Hades, the Greek word for the underworld. It is the word Peter uses when he quotes Psalm 16 in Acts 2:27, where the Hebrew psalm says Sheol (Psalm 16:10).

Why it’s interesting

The two words fit each other well. The Hebrew Bible pictures the world of the dead as shadowy and without praise, much like Hades in the old Greek poet Homer.
