DID YOU KNOW?

Psalm 1:5 says the wicked "will not stand in the judgment." What kind of word does the Septuagint, the ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, use for "stand"?

The answer

A word that usually means "rise from the dead": anastesontai, where a more literal Greek word for "stand" was available. In Hebrew, the line means the wicked will not stand up in court and be found in the right, here in this world (Psalm 1:5).

Why it’s interesting

Christians came to prefer the Greek reading. Psalms 1, 2 and 3 were read as foretelling Christ's resurrection and recited at Easter, as they still are in the Roman Catholic Church's daily prayers.
