DID YOU KNOW?

In John 3, Jesus says a person must be "born from above," and Nicodemus takes it to mean born a second time. Why can the words be taken both ways?

The answer

The Greek word for "from above" also means "again." The play works in Greek, the language John wrote in. It does not work in Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke.

Why it’s interesting

That is why the scene fails the test of fitting Jesus's own setting. If the conversation happened, it could not have gone exactly as John tells it.
