Rome ruled Judea in Jesus' day. Luke frames the story with Roman rulers — Caesar Augustus at the birth, Tiberius during the ministry — and a Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, presides at the trial.
Why it’s interesting
The Roman roads, taxes, and soldiers all over the Gospels aren't background scenery — they're the political weather of the whole story. 'Render unto Caesar' only bites because Caesar was very much in charge.
