In the Bible's own narrative sequence, Moses belongs to the Exodus, generations before Israel ever had a king; David comes much later, once the people are settled in the land and asking for a monarchy. That ordering is internal to the story — historians have no fixed date for Moses, and some question whether the figure is recoverable at all.

Between them lie the whole eras of the conquest and the judges — a span the Bible fills with figures like Joshua, Deborah, and Samson. David inherits a story Moses only pointed toward.
