THIS MIGHT SURPRISE YOU
The answer
In the Bible. Jonah says it in the prayer he prays from the belly of the fish: "weeds were wrapped around my head at the roots of the mountains" (Jonah 2:5-6). The prayer pictures him sinking through the deep, down to the bottom of the sea.
Why it’s interesting
The Hebrew word for weeds there is suph. Elsewhere it turns up most often in the name yam suph, the Sea of Reeds. That is the sea where Pharaoh's army sank, called the Red Sea in Exodus 15:4.
