DID YOU KNOW?

A reader says: "Jonah gets the last word in the book of Jonah." Agree or disagree?

The answer

Disagree. The book ends on God's words about Nineveh, its people and "also many animals" (Jonah 4:11). Jonah's last words come two verses earlier: "Yes, angry enough to die" (Jonah 4:9). He never replies to God.

Why it’s interesting

The ending stays open. Michael Coogan and Cynthia Chapman's Old Testament textbook says that because the question goes unanswered, several readings of the book remain possible.
