DID YOU KNOW?

In Hebrew, one verb, "appointed," sends each of the helpers God uses on Jonah. Which of these is not one of them?

The answer

A raven. The fish, the bush, the worm and the wind each come by the same Hebrew verb (Jonah 1:17; Jonah 4:6-8). English Bibles vary the word: the NRSVue says "provided" for the fish, "appointed" for the bush and the worm, and "prepared" for the wind.

Why it’s interesting

The big fish may call to mind the sea monsters of old stories, like Leviathan, which stand for chaos. A study Bible, the New Oxford Annotated Bible, calls this one a smaller, even comic version.
