TRADITION VS SCHOLARSHIP

A reader says: "The book of Jonah was written in Jonah's own lifetime, in the 700s BC." Agree or disagree?

The answer

Disagree. The story is set in the reign of Jeroboam II, in the 700s BC (2 Kings 14:23-25). The book itself was written after the exile, the years when many of Judah's people were taken to Babylon. Dates range from the 500s to the 200s BC, depending on whose dating you follow.

Why it’s interesting

Its writers were most likely educated scribes in Jerusalem. The book's many echoes of the Flood, Sodom, Elijah and the Psalms show how well they knew the older scriptures.

Genuinely debated
