1 Samuel 31:4 says Saul took his own sword and fell on it. One chapter later, 2 Samuel 1:6-10, an Amalekite reports that he killed Saul at Saul's request. The two accounts sit side by side.
Why it’s interesting
The narrative itself leaves room to read the Amalekite as lying to curry favor with David — but the text never resolves it, and simply lets the second account be told. The reader is trusted with the tension.
