The messianic secret, a name coined by William Wrede in 1901. Wrede catalogued Mark's silencing commands and argued the secrecy was the evangelist's theological design rather than history; others since have defended it as Jesus' own caution with crowds and expectations. The name stuck even where his explanation didn't.
Why it’s interesting
The Markan sandwich is real too — Mark's habit of splitting one story open and tucking another inside — which is what makes it a tempting wrong answer. The messianic-secret debate has now run for over a century, making Wrede's little book one of the most influential in Gospel scholarship.
