DID YOU KNOW?
The answer
Matthew. Matthew's prayer says "And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors" (Matthew 6:12). Luke's says "And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us" (Luke 11:4). Luke still says "indebted" for the people we forgive, and "sins" for what we ask God to forgive. Sins, here, may be thought of as debts owed to God.
Why it’s interesting
Matthew's word debts is echoed in his parable of the unforgiving servant, a story only Matthew tells (Matthew 18:23-35). The two prayers also open differently: Matthew's "Our Father in heaven" against Luke's "Father" (Matthew 6:9; Luke 11:2).
