The letter of James (2:24). Romans 3:28 says a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law; James says by works and not by faith alone. Both sentences are canonical, about sixty pages apart.
Why it’s interesting
James 2:24 is the New Testament's only occurrence of the phrase "faith alone" — with a "not" in front of it. How the two sentences fit has been argued from the Reformation to the present, and both letters are read in every church.
