In Revelation 1, John sees seven golden lampstands and a figure holding seven stars. What does the book itself say the lampstands are?

The answer

The seven churches. The book explains its own picture at once: "the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches" (Revelation 1:20).

Why it’s interesting

The book calls the picture a mystery, a hidden meaning it means to disclose. The angels are guardians, one for each church, and each message in chapters 2 and 3 is written "To the angel of the church" in its city (Revelation 2:1).
