DID YOU KNOW?

The angel's cry "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!" (Revelation 18:2) borrows its words from an older book of the Bible. Which one?

The answer

Isaiah. "Fallen, fallen is Babylon" is Isaiah 21:9, where riders come with the news of Babylon's fall. Revelation uses the line twice (Revelation 14:8; 18:2) and adds "the great."

Why it’s interesting

Isaiah's Babylon was the empire that would destroy Jerusalem and its Temple in 586 BC. The added "the great" echoes King Nebuchadnezzar admiring "magnificent Babylon" in Daniel 4:30.
