The answer
Genesis 6:19-20 says to bring the animals 'two of every kind.' A few verses later, Genesis 7:2-3 says to take 'seven pairs' of every clean animal and of the birds, and a pair of the rest. Both instructions are in the text.
Why it’s interesting
The extra clean animals turn out to matter to the story — after the flood, Noah offers some of them as a sacrifice (Genesis 8:20). The two counts sit a few sentences apart for anyone who reads slowly.
