Excavations have turned up 1st-century tombs, farming installations, and domestic remains at the site, including a dwelling uncovered in 2009. Population estimates vary; a small farming village of a few hundred is the usual range. Its absence from earlier records most likely reflects its size. Worth being clear on what this shows: people lived there. It doesn't speak to the Gospel events set there either way.
Why it’s interesting
Even in the Gospels the place is a punchline: 'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?' The archaeology quietly answers a modern version of that same doubt.
