TRADITION VS SCHOLARSHIP

A scholar says: 'Matthew and Luke both have Jesus born in Bethlehem, but they get the family there by different routes.' Agree or disagree?

The answer

Matthew seems to assume the family already lives in Bethlehem — there's a house, and only after Egypt do they resettle in Nazareth 'being warned in a dream.' Luke starts them in Nazareth and brings them to Bethlehem for a census, then home again.

Why it’s interesting

Both roads arrive at Bethlehem, as the tradition expected of the Messiah, but the journeys are quite different. Reading the two nativities in parallel — rather than blending them into one pageant — is where the scholarship begins.
