DID YOU KNOW?

Mark tells of Jesus's forty days in the wilderness. How many of the devil's temptations does Mark describe?

The answer

None. Mark gives the wilderness two verses. Jesus is there forty days, "tested by Satan," with the wild beasts, and angels wait on him (Mark 1:12-13). Mark never says what the tests were.

Why it’s interesting

The three temptations people know, stones into bread, the leap from the Temple and all the kingdoms of the world, come from Matthew and Luke (Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13). It is one of the few stories the two share that Mark does not have.
